This argument is utter nonsense. The people who rioted during partition were not exactly Elites. Do you really think they did not have Pakistan sentiment? There was universal adult franchise in Sylhet. Was the result any different?
In such societies, elites lead & others emulate

@abhivaarta I am fain to think the vote % would have been higher because Pakistan sentiment was much stronger among uneducated masses who did not think twice to sharpen their swords and go at the throats of unbeliebers during the partition days.
If we go by this absurd logic, let us see where it takes us. Since there was no universal adult franchise, the same logic can be used to claim that freedom of India was the sole aspiration of elite classes & does not represent the aspirations of masses who could not get to vote.
Wherever Jinnah conducted rallies, crowds swelled. These crowds were not from elite classes & they could not get to vote.
But they formed strength of league and were later the enthusiastic participants in partition violence. To think they would have voted otherwise is delusion

@abhivaarta And I could use the same logic again for Indian constitution. The members of Indian constituent assembly were not directly elected by people in universal adult franchise. Does that mean constitution does not represent India but represents only the elite masses?
See how absurd!
