Got this #Hinduphobic email from @Navatman newsletter this morning, where they claim that Mahabharata is NOT HINDU. They make money thru donations and ticket sales as they present themselves as a Cultural organization, based in NYC and perform Bharatnatyam based on Mahabharata.
Even Mahabharata a seminal text for Hindus is NOT HINDU. This dance company uses Bharatnatyam an art form deeply rooted in Natya Shastras (a Hindu text written by Bharata Muni) to sell tickets for $50-$100. They have even won awards. I was in fact very proud of them until now.
This is how appropriation works. The West pushes #Hinduphobia by saying that Hinduism is inherently castist/patriarchal/anti-social and instead of challenging it our own people decide to erase Hinduism in order to make money.
I wrote about this in regards to Yoga Appropriation for @Shaktitva . It applies here too. Their audience gets an exotified show but isn't comfortable with Hinduism so we get erased. They want knowledge but not the Hindu. shaktitva.org
As defined by @HinduphobiaConf here is the part of the #Hinduphobia Definition that applies. understandinghinduphobia.org
Please email them at nfo@navatman.org and speak up. This is gross #Hinduphobua

So more guilt tripping and not taking responsibility for @Navatman
I sincerely hope that Hindu Indian Americans stop supporting this organization. Not even an apology for all the #Hinduphobia
