Ban on firecrackers during Deepavali is the classic ‘take the easiest decision’ and be seen as doing ‘something’ ostensibly to tackle pollution. Tackling major causes for pollution is hard work and means taking on powerful lobbies, multi-disciplinary effort.
So many scholarly, research driven articles and data points are shared periodically about animal-based food production contributing to the most emissions but is anything done to change behaviour on that front?

Many of us switch to green tea and get that feel-good factor of becoming healthy as we sip that tasteless brew. But will not take the tough decisions (giving up on certain kinds of food) or actions (regular exercise, adequate sleep) needed to actually be healthy.
Very tough to enjoy Deepavali in a care-free manner, with fervour over the last few years. Pro max version of guilt pangs and total lack of enthusiasm from the younger generation on display. Huge success for the lobby which is behind this
When the activist who filed the PIL and won, attributes environment, eco warrior and ‘do good’ as the motivation, there will be takers, because it all sounds right. The effect of a cracker is visible while some other pollutants are silent, invisible or can’t be taken on
I read somewhere that India is pre-dominantly a non-veg eating country. I am not for a bit suggesting that personal food preferences should be foisted on others, regulate what others eat or we sit in judgement over food habits
What people eat is their business and no one should consider another kind of diet as inferior or superior. But imagine a call for ‘going meatless for a day’ or *gulp* a week - as a ‘do good’ measure - wouldn’t there be a furore about economic impact, freedom etc.?
I am just bringing it up in the context of Diwali sermons from brands.
And people from all communities and backgrounds will fight such a move (rightly so) or ‘call out hypocrisy’. But hey, it’s different strokes for different folks - depending on the potential political damage
