Sulaiman Ibn Abdul Wahhab (d.1794) begins “The Divine Lightning” with the conditions of a qualified Imam as established by scholars before him.
He uses this in his opening response to his younger brother’s invitation to his sect, to remind MIAW of his status as a layman.
Imam Sulaiman Ibn Abdul Wahhab warns his brother:
"It is not permissible for the one making taqlid (layman) to declare someone an unbeliever in a matter where no previous consensus has been made by the Ummah".
MIAW's conquests of mass Takfirs was condemned by all Sunni ulema.
(Briefly)
Father:
Abdul Wahhab - Great Hanbali scholar of the Najd; master of fiqu, Qur'anic commentary, tasawwuf, and theology.
Brother:
Sulaiman - Grand Hanbali theologian, "Sheikh ul-Islam"; master of ALL 18 sciences of Sharia.
M. Ibn Abdul Wahhab:
Zero qualifications.
SCHOLARLY RANKINGS IN ISLAM
...As defined by classical Hanbali scholars. Some ulema list variations of these categories but this gives a rough idea about how authority in Islam works.
By all measures, and by admission of his own brother, MIAW was in the 7th category: "Laity".
Qadi of the Hanbalis, scholar and historian, Muhammad ibn Humaid al-Najdi [d. 1878], records in his ‘Suhub al-Wabila’ that Ibn Abdul Wahhab was a DECEPTIVE, MURDEROUS TAKFĪRI who led an EVIL movement.
Fine way to go down in the OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHICAL WORKS of your own school.
The Hanbalis preserved their scholarly history. These texts are official in-house records which detail the lives and contributions of Hanbali ulema (who, in total, amount to some 3/400,000 individuals.) This is the who's who of the Hanbalis. Salafi scholars don't make the cut.
This text, “al-Suhub al-Wabila 'ala Dhara`ih al-Ḥanābilah” is a continuation of Imam Ibn Rajab's (d.1393) “Dhayl 'ala Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābilah”, which is a continuation of Ibn Abi Ya'la’s (d.1131) “Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābilah” which starts from the life of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal ♥️
