Imam Al-Tabari talks about the Ashari belief of Kalam Nafsi regarding the Quran.

Now what does Imam Al-Tabari say about this belief
He says:
“The Quran is the speech of Allah that he revealed and it is from the meanings of his Towheed, what’s correct from the statement in this matter for us is that, the speech of Allah is uncreated

how it was written, where it was recited and in which position it was read, in the heavens it is found, in the earth where it is memorised, written in the preserved tablet, on the wooden tablets of children it is written, carved on rocks, or written on paper,
memorised in the hearts, spoken with the tongue,
so whoever says other than this, or claims that there is a Quran on the Earth and a Quran in the heavens that isn’t the one we recite with our tongues and written in our books, or believes this in his heart, or hidden in his self
so whoever says other than this, or claims that there is a Quran on the Earth and a Quran in the heavens that isn’t the one we recite with our tongues and written in our books, or believes this in his heart, or hidden in his self
or says it with his tongue,
he is indeed a disbeliever in Allah, his blood is permissible, he’s free from Allah and Allah is free from him,

And with the statements of Allah,
[ Rather it is an honoured Qur’ān, in the preserved tablet]. (85:21-22)

Allah conveyed, that the Quran written in the preserved tablet and heard from the tongue of the Prophet, they’re one Quran, like it is is memorised in the chests, and with the tongues of the elders and youngsters it is recited.”
القرآن كلام الله وتنزيله؛ إذ كان من معاني توحيده، فالصواب من القول في ذلك عندنا أنه: كلام الله غير مخلوق كيف كتب وحيث تلي وفي أي موضع قرئ، في السماء وجد، وفي الأرض حيث حفظ، في اللوح المحفوظ كان مكتوبا، وفي ألواح صبيان الكتاتيب مرسوما، في حجر نقش، أو في ورق خط، أو في القلب حفظ،
وبلسان لفظ، فمن قال غير ذلك أو ادعى أن قرآنا في الأرض أو في السماء سوى القرآن الذي نتلوه بألسنتنا ونكتبه في مصاحفنا، أو اعتقد غير ذلك بقلبه، أو أضمره في نفسه، أو قاله بلسانه دائنا به، فهو بالله كافر، حلال الدم، بريء من الله، والله منه بريء، بقول الله عز وجل
: {بل هو قرآن مجيد في لوح محفوظ}، وقال وقوله الحق -عز وجل-: {وإن أحد من المشركين استجارك فأجره حتى يسمع كلام الله}، فأخبر، جل ثناؤه، أنه في اللوح المحفوظ مكتوب، وأنه من لسان محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم مسموع، وهو قرآن واحد ... وكذلك هو في الصدور محفوظ، وبألسن الشيوخ والشباب متلو."
