THREAD | match analysis: Liverpool's chance creation methods v. Southampton
- Recognizable patterns to manipulate man-oriented wing backs
- "Throw-in routine" to create depth
- Wide rotations (FB-CM-WF)
- Generation of superiority via overlapping and underlapping runs
#LIVSOU
• 4 v 3 in build up, with Thiago at the top of the diamond
• The use of deep FBs and one lower CM (in the ballside) entices opp. double pivot
• Quick release from TAA (met with Jota) into an area in which LIV have a 2v1 overload
• Mane and Salah pin defence (SOU want a 1+)
The attacking transition breaks down, but the combination play involving Mane and Robertson in the left wing zone despite being overloaded 3 v 2, translates into the latter's reception of the ball in the cutback zone. (The DM became too ball oriented and lost sight of the FB.)
• Fabinho scanned and bounced the ball to Thiago, luring in the ST
• This creates an angle for Henderson to receive the ball and skip a pass, finding Salah behind
• TAA's deep positioning had dragged out WB
• Salah uses dynamic superiority
• 2v1 on the far side via overlap
@AFHStewart did a short video on LIV's throw-in routine about they go backwards to go forward. An example:
• Negative passes to bait press
• VVD's wide positioning pulls WF, opening up a passing lane for Thiago
• Vertical compactness is compromised
• Mane's half space run
LIV's 2-3-5 v SOU's 5-2-3
• Thiago drops next to VVD, stretching the press
• Fabinho operates as a space occupier
• Mane descends to left HS; his LB pins WB
• Nearside CB started from a deeper position (Jota)
- Jota is on a diff. horizontal line to provide diagonal support
• Henderson shows for a short option, DM follows him
• Salah moved to occupied the space, but VVD chose Henderson, who was also being man-marked
• Salah became attuned to this and gravitated towards the ball, dragging the CB out of position
• Henderson hits the space behind
LIV manipulated SOU to the left wing zone, then relayed it to the underloaded side (Mane's hands):
• TAA's reception of the ball acts as a trigger for WB
• Fabinho moves to provide support, which forces DM to engage, leaving Henderson
• This creates a momentary 2v1 (opp. CB).
• 4 v 3 numerical advantage at the back
• TAA's function as deep FB attracts pressure from opposition left wing-back.
• Mane drops into newly acquired space
• Henderson makes a supporting run adjacent to him
This is a simple but an effective concept. Salah takes on the SOU defenders, then cuts inside - sucking them in - clearing the space for TAA to spring forward on the overlap. 2 factors were key: (a) Salah's gravity, and (b) the timing of TAA's run to exploit the outer space.
A short FK was taken.
• Thiago drifts into space, and the DM tried to close him down but stopped halfway
• He realized that Jota was free behind him
• Jota is free because of Mane's active role in fixing the CBs
• Following the switch, the far side WB was overloaded 2v1.
