This thread has neglected a few critical points.
The fort was under Maratha Ingale Chalukya Sardars for the most relevant point of it's history, 1784 to 1803 CE.
House of Ingales subtly neared a point of becoming equal to their liege Shindeshahi House itself due to Ambajiraje.
Gwalior was merely a Royal-Prison with rubble for walls where rebellious Mughal royals were sent for slow-kill via opium dosed diets.
Also to be clarified, Gwalior Jats that Maratha Empire Sardars the Vinchurkars had defeated were Mughal vassals, not sovereign rulers.
Gwalior fort was completely repaired & fortified TWICE by Marathas.
The Shindeshahis occupied Gwalior Fort in 1803 CE not 1840s, after the British resigned it to Maharaja Daulatrao Shindeshahi when Subehdar Ambajirao Ingale tricked them.
Also it has to be clarified that the Jhansi Rani jumped from a small STAIRCASE platform of the fort upon her parked horse only, barely 3-4 feet, not from Gwalior fort ramparts.
She was killed later in the fighting after being stabbed by British sepoys.
The latest Repair Project due to which the fort looks the way it does today was commissioned by Maharaja Jayajirao Shindeshahi Himself where all the structures (Gurjari Mahal et al) that draw in tourism (to this day), were fixed by Him after centuries of neglect by North Indians.
