During the days of freedom movement, many Hindus opposed the appeasement politics of Gandhi.
However, they were asked to shut up in the name of "Hindu unity" and "National unity".
More vocal critics were dismissed by Congress propaganda machinery as "British Trojan Horses".
While Gandhi was building a secular image for himself through appeasement politics, the lower rung of Congress leaders tried to project Gandhi as a Kattar Hindu.
Congress propaganda machinery issued paintings depicting Gandhi as the incarnation of Shiva rescuing Bharat Mata.
While top leaders of Congress talked of "Hindu Muslim unity" & kept themselves aloof from exclusively Hindu issues , many lower rung Congress leaders talked of "Hindu unity" and raised exclusively Hindu issues.
Lower rung Congress leaders demanded blanket ban on cow slaughter.
Congress propagandists even wrote a Sanskrit stotra named "Mohanāshtakam" in praise of Mohandas Gandhi.
They claimed that chanting Mohanāshtakam would destroy all sins and eradicate all diseases
