my ten favorite pieces of writing from this year...
that personally demonstrated how on-chain writing is going to change how writing is done.
let's go let's go ๐Ÿ‘‡
1/
march 2021:
@mariogabriele enables readers to crowdpurchase a @thegeneralistco essay (with @jackbutcher illustrations) as an nft.
it doesn't just set a paradigm for owning writingโ€”but *collectively* owning writing.

2/
april 2021:
@khole_emily's "homoerotic teen thriller" novel BURN ALPHA, crowdfunded through mirror with tokens to support segal's career and earn future nfts of work.
a new model for fans to invest in writers and disintermediate publishers.

april 2021:
@packyM shares proceeds from his essay "Power to the Person" with everyone he quotes.
it's a sharp signal of the future of writing: getting paid permissionlessly for the impact and influence you have when others monetize your work.

4/
may 2021:
@chaykak and @daisandconfused crowdfund their publication @dirtxyz with nfts.
it's smartโ€”nfts incentivize backers to share their contribution socially to promote the publication.
but also suggests a new model of nft subscriptions.

5/
june 2021:
@David_Rudnick launches exodus 2, nfts of 19 pangram haikus to be released over 40 years.
a brilliant way of capturing value for brilliant work by pitting compounding attention over time against the scarcity of time itself.

6/
june 2021:
@sariazout drops @ghost_knowledge: readers crowdfund articles they want to see writers write.
a model for fans to commission work from creators, it produces many of the year's best pieces and inspires @viamirror on-chain version later.
7/
july 2021:
@yup_io proposes a meme economy in which caption writers split proceeds with the original meme creator.
memes, in other words, are really composable, multiplayer nftsโ€”for writers to recompose and monetize.

august 2021:
@dhof releases @lootproject, nfts of words that can be used to generate derivative works, play ugc games, or just traded.
it lets us see all the ways on-chain language can be code for games we want to play and worlds we want to build.
9/
november 2021:
@verses_xyz hard-forks a classic cyberpunk text to publish โ€œA Declaration of Interdependence of Cyberspace."
it's both collectively-written and collectively-signed on arweave, pointing to a future where we use wallets to sign work.
10/
november 2021:
@sirsuhayb announces a partybid inspired by @ConstitutionDAO to research and reclaim abolitionist texts.
it shows what collective ownership on-chain can do in reclaiming significant off-chain writing.
(also, please support it!)
11/
final note:
in terms of on-chain writing, we're just scratching the surface of what's possible with collective creation, decentralized voting, hard-forked writing, on-chain contracts, and exquisite corpsesโ€”which @viamirror and @verses_xyz will increasingly make possible.
