Here's a bookplate you don't see everyday.... ๐Ÿง
This is the etched bookplate of the art dealer and bibliophile Vincent Van Gogh (1866-1911), first cousin of the artist. The bookplate was engraved by Marius Bauer (1867-1932).
The Vincent van Gogh whom this bookplate belonged to was the son of the artistโ€™s uncle, Cornelis van Gogh (brother of the artist Vincentโ€™s father), who was a bookseller and art dealer in Amsterdam. โ€œUncle Corโ€ appears nearly 250 times in the painterโ€™s correspondence.
Many of these mentions refer to visits to Uncle Corโ€™s bookshop and gallery, and the artist Vincent seems to have found inspiration more than once looking at the illustrations, engravings, and other materials he found in Cornelis van Gogh's shop.
As the artist himself indicates in a letter from January of 1889, Cousin Vincent - the Vincent Van Gogh of this bookplate - inherited the bookshop from his father, Cornelis, and continued the business himself.
