This will be an ongoing thread, because frankly such opinion still continuing seems to be because people choose to rely on non-sampradāyikas and the ones belonging to it seldom take the effort to correct it. I’ll include stuff here which are most relevant.
1) Śaṅkara Digvijaya:
Describing Śaṅkarar thus in the 4th Sarga, verse 58
“त्रिपुण्ड्रं तस्याऽऽहु: सितभसितशोभि त्रिपथगां..” इति
2) Now the question of vaidika donning Tripuṇḍra is quite easily handled. Not only is it Vaidika but the rites to do bhasmadhāraṇa are from the śruti.
From Atharvaśiras
“अग्निरिति भस्म वायुरिती भस्म…
These mantras one must don bhasma to be rid of the pāśas.
3) Bhasmadhāraṇa is so closely associated with Vaidikam that even lokāyatas mocked them as
अग्निहोत्रं त्रयो वेदास्त्रिदण्डं भस्मगुण्ठनम्। this mockery is very old
4) The dvaitin Nārāyaṇa Paṇḍita also assails Advaitins as those who don Bhasma.
In his Maṇi Mañjari there is an episode of evil Māyāvādins harassing Vaiṣṇavas as forcing them to change their “marks”. Wonder what that could be.
5) Bṛhajjābāla Upaniṣad talks of Yatis donning Bhasma and not ūrdhva.
6) From the Mahābhārata
“आयुष्कामो द्विजो देवि धारयेद्भस्य नित्पशः। मोक्षकामी च यो विप्रो भूतिकामोथवा पुनः। पुनरावृत्तिरहितं लोकं सम्प्रतिपद्यते।”
Stated by Īśvara Himself in the Anuśāsana Parva.
In the Padma Purāṇa, Śrī Rāma also dons the Bhasma as per the rites taught by Śrī Agastya, after which the Śiva Gītā is revealed.
I could keep on going.
