It is only after carefully studying the career of Maharaja Mahadji Shinde that the painful heartbreaking realisation of Maratha losses at Panipat, 1761 dawn upon a history student.
The amount of loneliness when you no longer come across names of illustrious Maratha leaders...
The most random, worthless Mughalia Qatabūllāh Sardars moved around North India on par with the solitary Maratha leader Maharaja Mahadji Shinde, where once great Maratha warriors easily bulldozed every enemy, shows how severe the impact of Kulin Maratha losses was on India.
We must never pretend that there was a "resurrection".
It was a *reconquest* and yes, perhaps Maharaja Mahadji Shinde could have united North and South Indian polities against the Britishers, etc.
But it was still nothing as to what could have been if Panipat had been won.
