1/ Over the holidays, I went DEEP into the metaverse, writing a 26 page manifesto to outline the landscape & opportunities!💡
Think digital worlds, NFTs, big tech vs. startups, etc.

2/ Here's a quick run down of the things I cover in the article, and then I cap it off with closing thoughts & opportunities in the space.
The metaverse is an $800bn opportunity, and there's a lot to unpack.
Soooooo, what is the metaverse? 👇
3/ The metaverse is a buzzy term that's been around since 1992, but has new meaning now. Put simply, it's "a virtual world where people can socialize, work, shop, and play."
I categorize it into three sectors: VR, AR, and Virtual Worlds.
4/ So what's different this time around? I played The Sims, Club Penguin, and Webkinz growing up -- call it the Gen Z metaverse starter pack, if you will.
To start, the "metaverse" games of today (ie: @Roblox, @AxieInfinity) enable real ownership and monetization potential.
5/ I argue that the 3 biggest factors in the rise of the metaverse now are:
🌟 Market Timing
🌟Technology (ie: new consoles like Switch/Oculus)
🌟Generational Readiness
The latter is hardly written about, but Gen Z is playing a huge role here.
6/ Looking at the average age across a number of the largest platforms, it skews Gen Z.
For @Roblox, it's 9-12
For @FortniteGame, it's 18-24
For @Minecraft, it's 24
Brands are doing anything to get in front of these demos... meeting consumers where they are (in the metaverse)
7/ Let's talk use cases -- fashion in the metaverse.
There have been some incredible brand collaborations in 2021 -- ranging from virtual worlds, native games, skins collections & more.
Here's a few on @Roblox & @FortniteGame... but more in the article on @Minecraft, etc.
8/ These are mainstream brands getting into the metaverse via in-world collabs, skins, & more 👕
Think luxury (@BALENCIAGA & @gucci), fast fashion (@hm & @Forever21), and other iconic brands like @RalphLauren, @TommyHilfiger, @StellaMcCartney, @VANS_66, @Nike, @adidasNYC.
9/ While many of these partnerships are still being developed top-down through partnerships teams, there's an opportunity to partner directly with independent developers who are fueling UGC & play on the platforms like @Roblox (ex. below)
This will open the floodgates in 2022.
10/ Then I dive into -- music in the metaverse 🎶
Arguably the biggest driver of user adoption into the metaverse. It makes sense for artists who can monetize via platforms & skins, and fans love the engagement with their fave stars
The $/hour for artists in the metaverse is 🤯
11/ Musicians venturing into the metaverse include @LilNasX, Ariana Grande, @zaralarsson, @edsheeran, @SnoopDogg, @AvaMax, @justinbieber, @charli_xcx...
There will surely be more artists in 2022 who make the jump into the metaverse! 🎶
12/ There are many ways to dive into the metaverse for artists/creators --
concerts like @LilNasX
create virtual worlds in @TheSandbox like @SnoopDogg
develop virtual merch collections like @zaralarsson (& make $1m+ just off that) -- here's one on my @Roblox avatar!🥰
13/ Next I discuss the open metaverse hinging on the premise of interoperability (many blockchain-based games, co's like @Genies) vs. the idea of a closed metaverse (@Meta, @Microsoft Mesh, etc.)
We want to be able to bring our NFTs and collectibles across worlds -- that's open.
14/ And the metaverse isn't just a consumer play -- many enterprises are developing virtual HQs for their employees on @decentraland, digital storefronts (ie: @sothebys), and adopting new tech like @gather & @MicrosoftMesh to conduct virtual meetings and hang out.
15/ It's been awesome to see crypto (@MetaMask) & non-crypto companies (@PwC) alike buying land in open metaverse platforms like @TheSandboxGame, @decentraland, and @cryptovoxels.
The metaverse is helping co's build culture in a remote-first world.

16/ Finally, I dive into the role of NFTs in the metaverse -- it's hard to ignore the adoption in 2021, w/ @opensea volume surpassing that of Etsy. NFTs can be the gateway into the metaverse, your avatar or ticket. I.e.: @adidasoriginals @dolcegabbana
17/ & it's not just the crypto community driving NFT adoption, or even brands.
It's also celebrities & creators like @ParisHilton, @TomBrady, @ReeseW, @MarthaStewart, @SnoopDogg who are paving the way with both NFTs and the metaverse alike.
18/ Lastly, I share my thoughts on opportunities to build in the space💡
