If you removed non- Kikuyus from Kiambu County
You would have to close half the businesses
And most likely also close all nursery schools and maternity wards
Kikuyu is the least integrated community
More Kikuyu have migrated to the rest of Kenya
Than the number of non-Kikuyus who have migrated into Kikuyuland
THIS HAS BEEN A BIG DISADVANTAGE
The image of prosperity and business wizardly
Belies a conservative people
Religiously and politically narrow-minded
Because of inbreeding
Of mediocrity
Due to lack of β€œoutsiders”
This mediocrity is clear from the way Kikuyus perceive other tribes
With condescending suspicion
Hence areas inhabited by Kikuyu pure
are the hotbeds of tribal bigotry
they were the epicenter of kumira kumira
and are now struggling to make sense of themselves
Kiambu County wears an urban façade,
And true, some sections have recently become cosmopolitan
Like Ruaka, Kiambu Road, Ruiru, etc
But the rest of Kiambu remains backwards
Some community beliefs and practices are unbelievable
For people within Nairobi Metropolitan
Economic vibrancy of Ruaka and Kiambu Road
is because of ethnic diversity
Former governor once proposed
80% employment of locals
But could not answer why
we cant also cap number of non-local customers in businesses (including rental houses)
We must work our way backwards out of this fear of integration
My first job after form 6
Was teaching at a school deep inside Kalenjin land in Londiani
2 of my colleagues were Kikuyus.
One had schooled in Kapropita Girls. The other one from Kabianga
During my time
Young people celebrated going to boarding schools
Far from home
We looked forward to getting jobs away from our villages in different parts of Kenya
Yet, today, I cannot take my daughter to school
Or allow them to go to work
in Kericho, Nandi, Landiani, Eldoret
In 2008, the conflict extended between Kikuyu and Luos
Such that a Luo working in places like Nyeri feel unsafe
Very very bad
This politics of madoa doa
Is so foolish and primitive
We are making a fool of ourselves
Because of politics and politicians
