One of the first things Israel did after occupying Gaza in 1967 was to destroy Gaza's central train station. The station connected Gaza with the rest of Palestine and the Levant, & after 1948 it connected Gaza with Egypt. Photos show the station before and during its destruction.
The saddest scene in this story is of Palestinians from Gaza watching in horror and disbelief the destruction of a train station that once connected them with the rest of the world.
After 1967, Israel destroyed the entire railway tracks stretching from Gaza to the Suez Canal. Israel used the tracks to build the Bar Lev line of fortification on the eastern bank of the Suez.
