#Thread
After a very long time, trying to resume with my Mahabharata series.
This thread is based on yet another lesser known character who had bigger significance in Mahabharata. This is the story of Yuyutsu, who was one amongst the 102 kids of Dhritshrashtra, who survived war
We all know that Dhritshrashtra had 100 sons, famously known as Kauravas, a daughter Dushala, but apart from his 101 kids with Gandhari, he had 1 son born from a Dasi, who was called as Yuyutsu.
As per some stories, Yuyutsu was elder to Duryodhan & younger to Yudhisthir.
When Gandhari was pregnant, around that time Kunti also got pregnant. Kunti's delivery was on schedule & Yudhisthir was born as the elder Prince of the Hastinapur.
Dhritshrashtra was very angry with this, while Gandhari is yet to deliver. It was frustrating for both of them.
Due to delayed pregnancy, Gandhari was unable to serve Dhritshrashtra, so Dhritshrashtra was served by a Dasi called Sugadha. Later that Dasi got pregnant
In the meanwhile, Gandhari well past her due date, is yet to deliver her baby. Out of frustration, Gandhari aborts her child
Her Fetus was a hard ball, an unusual structure. Hence, Ved Vyas were called. Vyas then divided that fetus in 101 equal parts & kept them in seperate pots filled with ghee. After a year, 100 Kauravas & Dushala was born. Total incubation period of Kauravas could have been 2 years
Before, Duryodhan & other Kauravas were born, Sugadha, the Dasi had delivered a son called Yuyutsu, who was elder to other Kauravas in age. Dhritshrashtra never had any love for him as he was an illegitimate son.
Dhritshrashtra was always inclined towards Duryodhan as his heir
Yuyutsu was also educated in the Gurukul along wid Kauravas & Pandava princes
He never approved cunning behaviour of Duryodhan & his brothers. Yuyutsu was inclined towards Yudhisthir & regarded him as his elder brother
Yuyutsu informed Pandavas when Duryodhan had poisoned Bhima
Yuyutsu alongside his brother Vikarna had opposed Duryodhan & Dushyasan during the Draupadi Vastraharan.
Yuyutsu had developed a special bond with Vidura & he use to learn Dharma from both Vidura & Yudhisthir, which made him a Man of Virtue & he always stood for Dharma.
When Duryodhan was crowned as the Prince & ruler of Hastinapur, Yuyutsu was always given responsibilities of ruling the provinces, away from Hastinapur. So he had spent lot of time outside of the Raj Mahal & fulfilled all his responsibilities with utmost dedication.
When the Mahabharata war was eminent, most on the Kauravas side were forced to fight alongside Kauravas coz they were duty bound to defend Hastinapur.
So Yuyutsu was also suppose to fight on the side of Kauravas, just like Bhishma, Dronacharya, Kripacharya, etc.
Just before the war, when both Pandava & Kaurava armies were positioned, Yudhisthir walked to the middle of the park.
He first asked warriors on Pandava side, that if you think I am wrong & Dharma is on opposite side then it is the right time to switch on to the other side.
He then asked Kauravas that if you think I am right & Dharma is on my side then u are welcome to join my side. Hearing this, Yuyutsu decided to cross over frm Kaurava side to Pandava side. He was only warrior to cross over frm either side.
Yuyutsu always knew Yudhisthir was right
Yuyutsu was a Atirathi, a warrior capable of fighting 60,000 warriors at a time. Looking at his switch over Duryodhan got furious & he said that a step brother has shown his true colours & he has betrayed me
Shalya replied to him, two step brothers are fighting on Pandava sides
Shalya said my two nephews Nakula & Sahdeva are standing firm with their step brother Yudhisthir
He said in fact when they learned that their Mama Shalya is going to fight on Kaurava side, they both wanted to kill me but Yudhisthir stopped them
So your step brother chose Dharma
Yuyutsu proved as an important ally to the Pandavas, as he knew about the secret plans of the Duryodhan & his inputs were proved valuable in the war. Yuyutsu survived the war for 17 days, he was the only son of Dhritshrashtra who had survived the Mahabharata war.
It was Yuyutsu who performed the last rites of Dhritshrashtra as a son.
After ruling Hastinapur, Pandavas decided to abandon the rule & leave for Swarga. Just before they left, they appointed young Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu as the King of Hastinapur & Yuyutsu as the caretaker
Yuyutsu was appointed as the caretaker ruler of Hastinapur till Parikshit becomes adult and a capable ruler.
Yuyutsu was a worthy candidate as a caretaker ruler as he had learnt Dharma from Yudhisthir & Vidura. He had learnt fighting skills from Bhima & Arjuna
He had learnt service from Nakula & Sahdeva. So he had perfect blend of a ruler & a loyal guardian of Parikshit
Death of Yuyutsu is not known. During rule of Parikshit, Kaliyug had begun.
Yuyutsu played his imp part in the Mahabharata.
