The first ship powered by steam to journey from England to India. The SS Enterprise managed this feat in Dec 1825 , ushering in a new era - the age of sail gave way to the age of steam.
Notice the sails on it ? This was an 'Auxiliary Steamship' , still using sails weather permitting. In fact , steamships continued to carry sails as back up even after tech improved!
Now in the 21st century, we are once again looking at the possibility of sails as "green energy"
This particular vessel, the SS Enterprise docked at Calcutta in Dec 1825 , was later sold to EIC and pressed into service in the Anglo Burmese war ( 1850 approx) as a supplies and communication vessel !
Trivia : This War also saw the Telegraph being used for the first time.
Ocean going ships continued to carry sails till 1870 , when the HMS Devastation finally sailed without any. The central 'main mast' became a lookout and gun post. It continues to be called 'Main mast' on modern ships !
