13 ways to remove distraction from your life
(those who do will rule the world)
In today’s world that is full of noise, limiting noise is getting harder and harder.
It’s important that we create pockets of silence, stillness, and reflection.
Noise limits our ability to:
• think
• be creative
• cultivate depth
• be at peace and free from anxiety
• listen to our inner voice or God’s voice
So, how can I remove distractions from my life?
1. Have a plan before you begin
When you don’t have a plan, are you really distracted?
Having a plan will help you focus on what truly matters.
2. Set time limits on your goals
When you commit to a deadline, it is focusing.
Set a realistic but short timeframe and as it approaches you’ll find yourself getting more focused.
3. Let your friends curate information for you
Don’t consume the news and let other people bring it to you.
You’ll still hear a surprising amount.
4. Stop swimming in infinity pools
This is a concept from the book Make Time.
Get rid of apps that refresh with new data constantly to keep you hooked (I’m looking at you, too, Twitter)

5. Choose more filtered content
Choose content that has to go through gatekeepers.
Editors and publishers usually show a level of quality not seen through general internet sources.
6. Control social media
Social media is ruling many of your lives.
Instead of asking if it’s valuable, ask instead:
How much value does it bring, and at what cost?
Remove it from your phone, or use screen time or an app to limit your access.
7. Parent your phone
Give your phone a schedule and utilize do not disturb features.
Leave it out of your room and then don’t pick it up for an hour after waking up.
Science shows that it even being in your room affects your focus.
8. Take breaks
Breaks help refresh your mind and increase the overall quality of your work.
• Chat with a coworker
• Go for a walk
• Have a snack
• Stretch
Set a timer and restart work as soon as it goes off.
9. Get comfortable with doing nothing
Don’t fill every spot with your phone.
Don’t listen to the podcast in the car.
Doing this will help you get comfortable with silence and enjoy the world around you.
10. Take a walk
Taking a walk (without any media) is a great way to clear your head and process information.
When it’s just you and nature it has a cleansing quality to it.
11. Journal
Journaling is a great way to clarify your thoughts.
Therapists are expensive, journals are not.
In many cases, you can get the same benefit with less expense.
(Therapy is valuable, so don’t twist this)
12. Get more sleep
Sleep deprivation will wreck your focus and make you more easily distracted.
You need 7-9 hours per night. Get in bed.
13. Pray or meditate
With prayer, focus on the attributes of God.
With meditation, start with short sessions to get used to the sensation.
I truly believe it’ll be a superpower to create pockets of silence, stillness, and reflection in the future.
This isn’t getting easier, so it’s important we master these techniques now.
Thank you for reading!
I released a podcast episode this week where I break this down even more and apply these lessons to help you spend less money.
