In the Greco-Turkish population exchange of 1923, it became clear that ethnolinguistic identities meant nothing in front of religious ones.
The Karamanlides, Turkic Orthodox Christians, were expelled to Greece despite their attempts to identify as pro-Turkish.
You even had Karamanli Turkic Orthodox priests who were openly anti-Greek and supported Turkish nationalism like Papa Eftim.
The Karamanlides were expelled from Turkey despite their own desire to want to stay there.
Similarly, the ethnic Greek-speaking Muslims such as the Vallahades and Cretan Turks were also sent to Turkey.
