Negotiation Tips
Think negotiating a salary raise is hard?
You're right.
The truth ― 95% of negotiations are won before they even begin.
I've negotiated $200,000+ in raises.
Here's my cheatsheet to getting your next raise:
You're right.
The truth ― 95% of negotiations are won before they even begin.

Here's my cheatsheet to getting your next raise:
1. Every negotiation is won by the side that has less to lose by walking away.
If you're easily replaceable, you're at the mercy of your employer.
If you're not, your employer has more to lose ― you have *leverage*.
But how do you make yourself hard to replace?

But how do you make yourself hard to replace?
2. By making your skillset valuable AND rare.
Most people focus on building a valuable skillset.
But just because you're valuable doesn't mean someone else isn't willing to do the same job for equal or less pay.
Your skillset also has to be *rare*.

Rare means:
• Hard to find
• Hard to train
• Hard to replace
Put your hand up and take on the work in your organization that would make you hard to replace.
A good place to start: take work off your boss's plate.
Make their life easier and yourself hard to replace.

3. Closed mouths don't get fed.
Many people wait for their managers to give them a raise.
This almost never happens.
Your career and your income are your responsibility.
And it's your job to start the conversation.

4. Don't assume. Don't wait.
Talk to your manager and make sure you know what you need to do to get a raise - don't assume.
And don't wait when you know you've accomplished it.
Personal example below:
Talk to your manager and make sure you know what you need to do to get a raise - don't assume.
And don't wait when you know you've accomplished it.
Personal example below:
2018 - I asked my boss what I needed to do to get a $10k raise.
She wrote down a list.
I accomplished it in 3 months.
I went back & asked for the raise ASAP.
Conversation lasted 10 minutes.
I got the $10k raise.
Negotiations are 10x easier when expectations are aligned.

5. Track and quantify your impact.
You can't argue with cold hard numbers:
• Show them what you've worked on.
• Show them the $ impact of that work.
It's hard to deny you a $10k raise if you can show you've generated $100k.

6. Make it a no-brainer
Don't do the bare minimum you need to get a raise.
Make it your goal to add so much value that your manager feels embarrassed not giving you a raise / promotion.
It's in the best interests of both you and your company for you to add that level of value.

7. If you've taken care of everything above..
You've taken care of the 95% of things that will determine your success on the day of the negotiation.
Best of luck!

But what about negotiating tactics?
Negotiating tactics only work if you have leverage.
No negotiating hack is going to trick someone into giving you a raise if you don't have leverage.
So focus on building leverage first!
(I'll cover negotiation tactics in a future thread).
