On Monday morning this Toyota Probox lost control and rolled into a ditch near Kenol Muranga killing its driver.
But this was not a "regular" fatal road accident.
🧡
The driver of the Probox was an active KDF officer who was on leave - Senior Private F.Gitonga - attached to Defence Headquarters Camp Admin Unit (DHQ - CAU).
His cargo - 7 Ethiopian nationals with no papers - who all survived.
With a working theory that this was a human smuggling racket - it makes no sense why the vehicle which was supposed to be heading towards Nairobi with the migrants crashed (near Kenol) while moving in the opposite direction (Makutano).
The Probox also had several bullet holes on its rear side - adding more questions about the accident and incident.
Moving in opposite direction at high speed.
Bullet holes in the rear.
And eyewitness claim there was an armed survivor who escaped (kdf too? partner?).
Kenya plays a key transit role in trafficking of Ethiopians to South Africa - and this is reflected in the volume of victims 'arrested':
3 weeks ago 16 were arrested in Meru and 22 in Buruburu.
4 weeks ago 91 were arrested in Kitengela.
5 weeks ago 31 were arrested in in Meru.
There are two legs for these South Africa bound Ethiopian migrants:
1st leg is from ET to KE (through Moyale) - the smuggling fee is minimum $1000 per person.
2nd leg is from KE to ZA.
The total smuggling fee is minimum US$3500 with the Kenyan part being the most expensive.
Human smuggling networks are quite synchronized.
Ethiopians are collected at (mostly) Moyale and taken to Meru & Muranga by Team one.
Team 2 picks & delivers them to Thika and environs.
Team 3 picks & delivers them to Nairobi (for papers).
Then hands them to the TZ syndicate.
