1. Establish a vision and strategy: The coach, in partnership with athletes and directors, creates a vision and a strategy based on the athletes’ needs and developmental stages, and the social context of the club or organization.
2. Shape the environment: The coach works with a group of athletes and takes responsibility for individual objectives as well as the club’s goals. The coach should seek to optimize the environment through the maximization of resources.
3. Build relationships: The coach must build positive relationships with athletes and other people associated with the club. This includes the personnel at the club, school, federation, and other levels. The coach is responsible for contributing and influencing the organization.
4. Conduct training sessions, prepare and manage competitions: Coaches must prepare for and lead in training and competition. They need to organize appropriate and challenging training sessions using effective pedagogy and a methodology that promotes learning and improvement.
5. Understanding and reacting on the field: The coach must observe and respond to events appropriately, including all on-field and off-field matters. Effective decision-making is a must to fulfill this and is a skill that all coaches must refine at each stage of their career.
6. Reflect and learn: The coach evaluates the program as a whole, as well as each training session and match, and is continually seeking improvement. In addition, personal evaluation and reflection underpin a process of ongoing learning and professional development.
