1) Here’s the quick and dirty guide to improving your relationships (a thread) 🧵👇
2) Set rules for yourself. What behavior will you tolerate and not tolerate from others? What traits or characteristics are negotiable? Which are non-negotiable?
3) Decide on consequences. If someone breaks one of your rules, what happens? Do you end the friendship? Do you stop coming home for Christmas? Do you limit phone calls or block them on Instagram?
4) When a rule is broken, communicate the consequences to the person calmly. “Mom, I constantly feel judged when I come home to visit. It’s not good for either of us. I don’t think I’m going to come home as often anymore.”
5) Follow the fuck through. No take backs. No “LOLOLOL JK!!!!”
6) One of two things will happen when you do this: a) you limit your exposure to someone who is hurtful towards you, or b) the person respects your boundaries and alters their behavior.
In both cases, your relationships improve...
