๐ก๏ธ Marathaa: The Elephant Slayers ๐ There is a special connection between Marathas and War-Elephants. Maratha warriors have a peculiar noted novelty of attacking or performing stunts with War-Elephants (and other animals) during combat throughout their history.
1. Dattajiraje Jadhavrao brought down a berserker Elephant at Raja Khandagale's Hatti Prakarna. In one of the most drastic events in Deccani history, Jadhavraos & Bhonsales clashed in a violent conflict because of misunderstanding Dattaji's attack on Khandagale's Elephant.
2. Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja, after retiring from his assault on Aurangzsb's Uncle Shaista Khan's garrison in Pune Mansion, was cornered by a War-Elephant Corps. Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja himself hacked off the trunk of the Elephant and put that beast to flight!
3. Mankari Sardar Nagojiraje Naik Jedhe Deshmukh, charged and speared a War-Elephant head-on which Adilshahi General Hussain Khan Miyana was fleeing in Battle of Yelburga in 1677 CE. Sardar Nagojiraje severed the trunk of the elephant & made it turn back before being shot dead.
4. Subehdar Tanajirao Malusare, at the Battle of Simhagad, killed off an opium & marjuana enhanced Berserker War-Elephant named Chandravalli. By evading the charge of Chandravalli, Subehdar Tanajirao jumped upon it's back & hacked off it's trunk with a single stroke, killing it.
5. Sarnobat Yesajirao Kank, famed for his prowess, fought & chopped off Golconda State-Elephant's trunk at Qutubshahi darbar when the Sultan challenged Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's claim that He needed no War-Elephants as Marathas were equal to War-Elephants in their own right.
6. Marathas are recorded in general, as having directly attacked and hacked off War-Elephants during the Battle of Pratapgad with their own swords. After slaying Afzal Khan, the Marathas crashed down upon the Adilshahi forces and utterly defeated them.
7. Senasahebsubah Raghujiraje Bhonsale, Liberator of Bangฤl Subah, killed off a maneater Tiger with his Dandpatta when the Tiger attacked the Palanquin of Hindupati Padshah Chattrapati Shahu Maharaja during one of his morning hunts. From Nagpurkar Bhonsalyanchi Bakhar.
8. Raja Rao Rambhajiraje Nimbalkar Jayawant Bahadur attained fame by saving Asaf Jahi Nizam's life after a buffalo rushed into Nizam's court & made for the dais. Rao Rambha who was near Nizam, with his martial reflexes drew his sword & buried it deep into the heart of the beast.
Special Mention: Vishwasrao Maharaja Shrimant Yashwantrao Pawar Saheb who had killed one of the greatest Afghan commanders Haji Nawab Alkuzay Atai Khan Popalzai Durrani, Nephew of Durrani Empire Grand Wazir at the Third Battle of Panipat (1761), by pouncing atop his War-Elephant.
It appears Marathas lived up to the proverb: "Mฤrฤvฤ tar Hฤthi va lootฤve tar bhandฤr!" If you are going to be a Killer, kill elephants. If you are going to raid, raid treasuries.
