Idli is referred to as 'Iddlige' by Shivkoti Acharya, author of the ninth century Kannada literary work 'Vaddaradhane'. In the eleventh century Kannada encyclopedia Lokopkar, the composer Chamundarai has described the Idli recipe.
Idli's reference is also found in the magnificent encyclopedia "Mansollas" composed by King Someshwar III around 1129.
