[MATCH THREAD] RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich:
- These are my live notes as I'm watching the game.
- Aggressive lineup from Nagelsmann starting that front 5 together.
- Salzburg in their usual 4D2. Camara at the base and Aaronson behind the striking duo.
- Bayern's intentions are clear. A 325 with Kimmich/Tolisso pivot. Muller/Sane in the half spaces. I'd use Muller as more of a 10 and Sane as a ss making runs off of Lewa.
- RBS are in their diamond shape. Ball-side cm pushes up while the ball-far cm stays deep to cover.
- Salzburg's intensity is already on display. Wober (lcb) commands Ulber (lb) to pressure Muller on the reception point. He himself goes to Gnabry to cover. Solet (rcb) is 1v1 vs Lewa but the positioning of Camara (dm) and the pressure don't allow the pass to be a viable option.
- Lovely pro-activeness this from Solet the rcb. Pushing that high to ensure Bayern doesn't get out easily. His frame and long legs are a big advantage here. That's Lewa he is dueling in the 1st pic.
- Salzburg looking to play quick and direct. Aaronson's ability to drift wide allows them to try and overload the flanks. Here, we have the rcm, the 10, and the rb in a very small space. Camara (player most to the left) also shifts to right side to provide cover for the rb.
- Another comment about the last pic is that you can see Gnabry in his own box. That aggressive lineup from JN means that Gnabry & Coman will have to defend their boxes at times, which is not ideal obviously.
- You can see the lcm really high here pressuring the ball carrier while the rcm #7 is deep to cover. Muller drops deep to receive but the aggressive chase from the lb means that it's a risky pass and Bayern are forced to go long.
- Another instance where Aaronson drifts wide but this time it's to the left side. 10s who can drift to both sides are getting rarer these days. Good quality to have. This time you can see the rcm #7 higher up so the rb #43 stays deeper to balance it out. Good understanding.
- The physicality/intensity that the RB teams are renowned for are on display. To have a competent diamond you have athletes everywhere on the field since the there are much more space out wide than other formations. And, the RB school does the intensity/physicality best.
- This is not a position you ever want. If the pass was better to Adeyemi, that's a 1v1 which favors the attacker since Sule is not light-footed. I'm not sure Nagelsmann drops this aggressive approach against elite teams but if that's a Thiago pass to Salah, the result differs.
- Good switch from Tolisso here. You have to switch often to take advantage of the natural narrowness of the diamond. You take 1v1s for Gnabry all day everyday. Good positioning from the keeper to make the save.
- First time Salzburg is building from the back. A standard 4D2 shape but the cms are in staggered lines at least. Also, the centrality of those 4 midfielders give RBS a higher chance to win the 2nd balls after long passes.
- Been impressed with Camara. Wins the ball, looks up immediately, and gets his team out of pressure instantly. Has displayed good passing range so far. Quality on the ball. Some rashness can be seen off the ball though, but can be ironed out in time. High potential.
- Quite poor from Hernandez. Adeyemi gets inside and to his favored foot to easily, good little Bruno-like flick from Aaronson and a lovely first time finish from Adamu. Great goal.
- Great takedown by Adeyemi there. That's against Sule too. Lovely opposing moments from Aaronson and Capaldo #7 as well. RBS are definitely well-coached.
- Lovely from Camara once again. Shields the ball well to retain the ball. Then, shows for the ball immediately.
- Sometimes the midfield 4 turned into a flat 4 for RBS. Good variance from Jassle there. It might be a change towards the end of the half, to lessen the spaces out wide in order to mitigate the tiredness of the team.
- This is great by Solet. Sees the pass to Muller, leaves Lewa behind him to pressure Muller at the receiving point, comes from Muller's blindside to win the ball. That's the proactiveness I always praise.
- WOW. Camara again. Shows for the ball as soon as it's won. Then executes a first time lobbed pass that is perfectly weighted to Adamu.
- These were all taken down by Adamu. Great outlet play from him. Uses his frame really well.
- Coman has been very dangerous on 1v1s to start the 2nd half. Biggest deficiency of the 4D2. Quick quality switches regularly result in a 1v1, which is why the formation is not consistently viable at the highest level.
- Bayern have been much better in overloading the flanks this half, which in turn makes it easier to both settle in the final 3rd and to create the 1v1s mentioned in the last tweet.
- The goal comes from the same pattern. Overload on the right, switch to the left. #43 is against 2 players which results in a simply finish. Unfortunate for RBS but kind of ironic they conceded from the diamond's biggest deficiency.
- Most impressed by Camara, Solet, and Adamu.
- Great diamong from Jassle but it is a diamond after all as can be seen in the goal.
- Nagelsmann's approach is a bit too aggressive imo, maybe it's because it's Salzburg but this would be quite risky against the European elites.
