Paul Farmer changed my life before I ever met him. I'm a cliche: I read Mountains Beyond Mountains as a student, my worldview changed, and I decided I wanted to follow in his footsteps and pursue global health equity when I grew up.
But an atypical version of the cliche...

I was a med school dropout/grad student in music when I read MbM! Here's the story, a portrait of Paul at the bedside, an attempt to capture two of the most meaningful moments in my life, a small homage to Paul from one of the countless lives he touched and shaped.đź’” 2/

I saved the text Paul sent me that day. It brought tears to my eyes and still does. He taught us that 'the billions' public health seeks to help is made up of a billion ones. He taught us to truly see and listen to each and every one. He did until his last breath. RIP 10/fin
I received the extraordinary gift of a signed copy of his magnum opus (a must-read). I'd only met him a few times, but was so touched he thought of me amidst so many people he worked with.
We will honor his memory by doing his work, reading his work, sharing his work.
Glad so many people enjoyed this memory of a home visit with Doktè Paul. Here's another memory: my 1st conversation w him–which accidentally became a debate. He had a unique style of teaching, expanding your perspective, pushing your limits, and calling you to action... 🧵
Paul's writings–AIDS/Accusation, Uses of Haiti, Infections/Inequalities, Pathologies of Power, Haiti after Earthquake, Fevers/Feuds/Diamonds are must reads...but if you want to see more of him in all his humor and complexity and vision, read his speeches amazon.com
