This late eighteenth century Mughal painting from Lucknow depicts a woman indulged in 'Shiva-puja'(worship of Shivalinga). The scene most probably represent the occasion of #shivratri

when people worship shivlinga at night. The crescent moon in the sky and sindoor spread on linga point to the famous religious occurence by Hindus.
The whole scene takes place far from the city, near rocky mountain where the Shiva temple is located.

The young woman, finely dressed in a green saree like garment sits in an attentive posture. Her upper body is sensuously ornamented with pearl necklaces, her beautiful left hand with rings and henna poetically touches the pearls around her neck.

The tacit conversation between a woman and god seems to reach the viewer where one can interpret the wishes desired by a young woman, most probably the desire for a suitable partner.
