@quadrismegistus Definitely agree whiteness is not the primary category here. But I think that if you want to tangle with that view it's important to reckon w/ how a move to depict Eastern European workers as exploited in west is *precisely* the dynamic by which EE immigs. became white in the US.
@quadrismegistus I also think that by far the most important and ignored framework on Here--just to vent for a sec in a relatively private part of it--is the old framework of "democracy good" "autocracy bad," which I've found shockingly absent both in pro-Ukrainian discourse which emphasizes (+)
@quadrismegistus Ukraine's "Europeanness," which is a trick to get the support of the full spectrum from Habermas to Γ“rban, but occludes what's actually shocking here; and in the terrible takes that scold people for caring more about this than Syria as if the anti-Assad forces had coalesced into+
@quadrismegistus a functional, sustainable state or that treats national sovereignty as a primary value as if Ukrainian sovereignty under Zelinksyy is no more or less legitimate than Iraq's under Hussein or Belarus's under Lukashenko. Whiteness discourse fails here when it misleads into (+)
@quadrismegistus thinking that sympathy for Ukrainians is motivated by race rather than values: had the Chinese responded to the 2019 umbrella protests by rolling in tanks to English livestreams as many people would be willing to risk nuclear war w/ China as are now willing to w/ Russia. (+)
@quadrismegistus That's depressing for two reasons. One, it speaks to general rot of democratic values on the left which sees the US/EU as sources of economic exploitation, not political values and stability, which augurs extremely poorly for the fight there;
@quadrismegistus Two, it futzes everything up about geopolitical values for the Chinese century. In conclusion: kick Hungary out of the EU, let Taiwan into NATO, and just let Iran have nukes already since they're more democratic than Russia.
