"Among other nations it is usual to turn the country into wasteland during war. But in India it is inviolable. The tillers of the soil, even when battle rages, are undisturbed by any sense of danger"
-Megasthenes, 250 BCE
Ancient Indian code of war. What the world always needed.

Ancient Indian code of war. What the world always needed.
The code slowly disappeared after the Turko-Mughal & British invasions, but even then the native armies rarely showed cold blooded instincts. It is still deeply ingrained in the Indian psyche. A defining cultural & legal trait inherited from the Sapta-Sindhu era(3000 BCE) itself.
Great modern examples are the Battle of Lahore(1965) and the war of 1971. Despite being defensive campaigns, despite the most atrocious genocide and human rights abuses against minorities by the enemy side, despite firm victory, the conduct of the Indian army was impeccable.
Going forward, hypocritical indeed, India will have to dishonor & renege its true nature. Make no mistake, the wars of this era have no morals. A kΕ«αΉa-yuddha is thrust upon us. If India emerges victorious..only then can we uphold our ancient ideals and ask the same of the world.
