EMISSIONS UP IN GERMANY EVEN BEFORE NUCLEAR CLOSURES
Despite rising emissions, Germany is prioritizing coal subsidies even as German utility sources report that nuclear plants are in good shape w/ clear paths to continuation and restart (for 2 out of 3 recently closed reactors).
Nuclear closures Dec. '21 will lead to about 25 million tonnes of CO2 extra in 2022 above these 2021 numbers.
This would be less if replaced wholly by Russian gas, as Germany was planning to do. And may still do! German energy and foreign policy is a mess.
Today's electricity:
This is what Germany's energy policy is leading to: Russian gas and coal on top of German lignite, as nuclear is phased out but fluctuating weather remains...fluctuating.
France ripped out some of its nuclear reactors (partly on Germany's request) as recently as 2020.
The nuclear closures THIS December 31st would lead to ANOTHER 25 million tonnes of CO2, again per year, above 2022 number!
Germany can outbid EU for CO2 certificates, while using its enormous wealth to subsidize its own coal plants to protect its public.
I've been saying for over a year that Germany was planning to fracture Europe with its awful energy policy, while protecting its own people and industry with its wealth, but now with the war in Ukraine things have gotten very dark indeed.
Germany is betraying Europe.
