Today marks the 495th anniversary of the seminal Battle of Khanua fought between the Timurid-Mughals led by Zaheer-ud Din Mohammad Babur and the Rajput-Meo-Afghan Confederacy led by Rana Sanga of Mewar, on the plains of Khanua - in the vicinity of present day Fatehpur Sikri.
The battle resulted in a decisive victory for Emperor Babur and led to the re-establishment of Timurid rule over northern India (Hindustan), which lasted until the Afghan revival in 1540 - led by Sher Shah Sur.
Khanua was a watershed for the history of the Indian sub-continent.
So crucial was this engagement that on the eve of the battle, their Emperor Babur made Timurid forces swear on the Quran, “that they will not think of turning their faces from this battle while there is life left in their bodies".

Diligent use of heavy and medium artillery, complimented by innovate cavalry tactics, a dogged generalship and a superb sense of timing, ensured the Timurid side was better equipped, better mobilised and better led than the sheer weight of numbers fielded by their counterparts.
