Following qualifications were needed to be an Imam of Grand Mosque of Istanbul in the Ottoman Era during the reign of Sultan Suleyman in 1558.
1. To have mastered the languages of Arabic, Latin, Turkish and Persian.
2. To have mastered the Qur'an, the Bible and the Torah.

3. To be a scholar in Shariah and Fiqh.
4. To have mastered physics and mathematics upto the standards of teaching.
5. To be a master of chivalry, archery, swordfighting and the arts of war.
6. To be of handsome countenance.
7. To have a strong melodious voice.
