BREAKING: New United Nations report published today by UN Special Rapporteur @MichaelLynk5 concludes that the political system of entrenched rule in the occupied Palestinian territory "satisfies the prevailing evidentiary standard for the existence of apartheid"
You can read an "advance unedited" Word document with the full report here - ohchr.org
Look for A/HRC/49/87. Follow along with me for some highlights.
Lynk takes us on a journey from occupation to apartheid. He argues, in this report, "When the facts change, so must our minds." This is an insight that folks across the world are increasingly coming to terms with, see @JulianCastro 👇🏾
Pointing to 300 Jewish-only civilian settlements, 2 million Gazans in an "open air prison," and prominent politicians openly rejecting Palestinian statehood, Lynk asks "the inescapable question becomes: has the Israeli occupation curdled into something darker and more ominous?"
Lynk then reminds us of the chorus of prominent and thoughtful world leaders who have already drawn the conclusion that apartheid in ongoing. Ban Ki-moon, Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor
He also notes the numerous Israelis who have come to a similar conclusion, adding that if these responsible figures have determined that this reality is apartheid, then it is incumbent upon the rest of us to test that through the tools of international law and human rights
Lynk's conclusion? Israel has imposed upon Palestine an apartheid reality in (what should have been) a post-apartheid world.
Our reaction @hrw? High time to move beyond repeating platitudes and tired talking points that bear little relation to the reality on the ground.
Showing #CourageToFightApartheid requires to challenging the status quo, and imposing meaningful consequences on Israeli authorities responsible for this crime against humanity. #EndIsraeliApartheid #IsraeliApartheidWeek #Palestine
Sorry, this tweet should have tagged. @JoaquinCastrotx
