Собор Святого князя Владимира в Киеве [The Cathedral of Prince Volodymyr the Saint in Kyiv], printed in Kyiv, 1898.
One of the most iconic buildings in Kyiv, now under threat from Russian missiles, is commemorated in this spectacular example of 19th cent. book production. 1/
In 1884 Viktor Vasnetsov and other artists were commissioned to paint frescos in St Volodymyr's Cathedral, which had recently been constructed to celebrate a thousand years since Volodymyr’s Christianisation of Kyivan Rus in 897. The results are documented in this edition. 2/
In keeping with the prestige and importance of the project, no expense was spared in the production of this lavish book, starting with the magnificent Art Nouveau endpapers at front and back. 3/
The folio volume has 42 plates, some chromolithographed with gold and silver, and some double-page, the highlight of which is this glittering view of the interior of the cathedral. 4/
The title page is chromolithographed in gold, as are many illustrations and ornaments in the text. 5/
A few more spreads from Sobor Sviatogo kniazia Vladimira v Kieve [The Cathedral of Prince Volodymyr the Saint in Kyiv], Kyiv, 1898. 6/
And finally, I can't resist another photo of the simply gorgeous Art Nouveau endpapers, this time at the rear of the book. 7/
