Bill Gates used to say:
“Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana”
CC0 turns intellectual property from a banana peel into fuel for the fire
THREAD: A case study why CC0 will mint millionaires (and why Disney, Nintendo, and other brands should explore CC0)
Creative Commons (CC0) allows creators to place their work in the public domain
Why would an artist want to do that?
Wouldn't everybody just steal their art and make money from it?
Yeah, they totally would. That's the point
Let me explain a little more...
First, let's talk about @Disney
They're in countless lawsuits every year protecting their art
Disney thinks they're losing money every time copycats make money
But they’re not. This isn’t a zero-sum game
It’s positive-sum. It’s a win-win
Copycats using Disney's work is beneficial for everyone
Rather than protecting their art, Disney could enable artists to build on top of it
They’re currently leading with fear
They could be leading with generosity
I'll explain why with three examples
There’s an NFT project called @noundsdao
Rather than forbidding creators from using their art, they let anyone copy it via CC0
Anyone can profit on their own project with the Nouns imagery
This led to designer @jackbutcher selling custom Nouns sweatshirts
I spent $69 on one
Shouldn't @nounsdao be angry that people made money off their work?
No! They should be grateful!
@jackbutcher's 400,000+ followers now know about the Nouns brand.
By artists distributing their work, the Nouns brand grows in value!
FYI: @nounsdao now has a 71.5 ETH floor
There’s another CC0 called @tubbycatsnft
If you let anyone create a derivative, most of it will be low quality
So, they took a different approach to CC0
The Tubby Cats team hand-selected artists to stimulate high-quality derivative projects
Ie: 3D tubby cats, pixel cats etc
This new CC0 approach is what I call a CC0 studio approach
The team is acting as a studio and works with the artists to incubate their projects
This is leading with generosity - not fear.
There’s a CC0 called @blitmap founded by Vine co-founder @dhof.
They made a sci-fi universe with characters called Blitnauts
Anyone can build projects with their artwork.
Why choose CC0?
“Every derivative increases attention and mindshare of the original.”
CC0 is a win-win for the Blitmap team and community
The community already launched derivatives like Blitwear and @flipmap
Rather than fighting copycats, Bitmap encourages people to build on their ideas
They know it means more people will know about Blitmap
If @nounsdao loses a few merch sales to @jackbutcher, that’s cool
Jack’s hats lead people back to @nounsdao
When people see @tubbycatsnft copycat projects, that’s more eyes on @tubbycatsnft
That’s more sales and followers
Everything leads back to the original project.
tldr
If you’re building intellectual property, think about CC0
This lets anyone build with your art
Sure, other people will make money on your work
But, your project’s audience might grow like crazy
With a bigger audience, sales will rise
With value comes right back to you
CC0 isn't a hijack on your intellectual property, it's your community remixing your intellectual property
Subtle yet big difference

And disclaimer, there are plenty of areas where IP enforcement is critical and plenty areas where it makes less sense
For the areas that it makes less sense, the new mantra might be:
All rights unreserved is the new all rights reserved
