On Feb 3 1984,48-year-old Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre was abducted in Birmingham,UK as he got off the bus to walk the final 300 yards to his home.After being held captive for three days in Alum Rock near Birmingham, he was brutally shot three times in the head, neck & chest
Mhatre’s kidnappers had demanded 1mn pounds & release of terrorists one of whom was Maqbool Bhatt Bhatt,co-founder of JKLF(now a banned terror org in India),was in prison for killing CID officer,Amar Chand( stabbed him 21 times) & a bank employee he had killed during bank robbery
JKLF President and founder, Amanullah Khan, was picked up by Scotland Yard and held for questioning in the Mhatre case along with Hashim Qureshi, President of the Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir branch of the organisation. Subsequently expelled from UK,they returned to Pakistan in 1984
Mohammed Riaz & Abdul Quayyam Raja, were convicted of the murder of Mhatre
Mirza, 48, a JKLF terrorist, living in USA was identified in 2004, using fingerprints on the gun used to murder Mhatre. He had left for Pakistan in 1984 leaving behind his wife & 7 children in Birmingham
The People's Justice Party (UK), supported by the Mirpuri Pakistanis in UK was formed specifically to get them released. Its original name was FRAQ - "the Free (Mohammed) Riaz and Quayyam (Raja) campaign"
Later the name changed to "Justice for Kashmir" & then "the Justice Party"
Mhatre left behind wife Shobha & daughter Asha. Mhatre was a junior diplomat & not entitled to have personal police protection, making him an easy target. His daughter Asha says she can’t forgive Maqbool Butt & also questioned the release of terrorists for Ruabiya Sayeed in 1989
During a webinar held on 37th anniv. of Mhatre's killing,senior journalist Akhlaq Ahmed Usmani remarked that Pakistan sponsored-terrorism had hampered the peace situation in Kashmir Valley; panel was unanimous that peace was a possibility only if Pakistan's actions were curtailed
