The Comprehensive Guide to Finding & Hiring Subcontractors for your Home Service Business
A 🧵👇
A brief background if you’re new here, and haven’t heard of a remote home service business..
It’s just a home service business that utilizes subcontractors/independent contractors to complete the work instead of employees.
Why not just use employees?
Employees need time to train, you also need to purchase uniforms, equipment, and vehicles for them in order for them to complete the work for you.
This will result in using the profits from your business to buy all of those things.
Using employees isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. If you can build a team of employees in a home service biz, you will likely be able to sell the biz for much much more.
I like using subs because they already have the equipment needed to complete jobs for you.
It’s a faster way to scale and produce more cashflow, but you likely won’t sell this business for a lot.
Anyhow, let's get into it 👇
1/ What Makes a Good Sub?
Your ideal subcontractor is a one man band that does all of the work themselves.
They don’t market themselves, or don’t want to learn to market themselves.
They rely on word of mouth to acquire customers, which isn’t predictable.
The most important thing though... they typically don’t charge market rates.
A common question we get is: “What if the subs show up wearing branded materials?”
Answer: They’re not your ideal sub. If they’re investing into branded uniforms or truck/van wraps they won’t even consider subbing for you in the first place.
2/ Where do I find My Ideal Sub?
You can find subs in a few different places for free.
First place is going to be the 3rd, 4th, and 5th pages of Google and Yelp.
The less reviews the better.
Less reviews mean they’re not showing up organically on search. Odds are they aren’t getting very much work.
Second place is going to be local Facebook and Nextdoor groups.
Ask for referrals within your niche.
Homeowners and locals love to refer “their guy”. Great way to find quality subs.
The third and arguably best place to find good subs is your local supplier of your niche.
For example, there are some window cleaning suppliers in Orange County.
We’ve met tons of window cleaners there that are happy to be subs for us. This applies to most niches.
3/ Finding Subs Using Paid Platforms
Using paid channels to acquire subs applies to only House Cleaning.
Reason being is the equipment needed to clean a house is very minimal.
Most people can afford to invest in some basic equipment to start fulfilling jobs for you.
Indeed and ZipRecruiter are both great picks.
Just like you should always be marketing and selling, you should always be hiring.
It’s important to have a pipeline full of cleaners that are ready to go if someone were to ever quit on you.
It’s important to do a phone screening for all applicants, and pick the top 5-10 candidates of the bunch based on how the phone screening went.
Then do 1-1 zoom calls to get a better feel for them.
Book the best few to do test cleans on you and your friends/family houses.
This will help you avoid no shows to real customers and also get a review from your friends/family without feeling bad about it ;)
