IMPOSTER SYNDROME 101
I teach 100s of creators, researchers & PhD students every week.
The NUMBER 1 question I get asked?
How do I overcome imposter syndrome?
Here's how in 5 steps πŸ‘‡
Firstly, what is it? I think Neil Gaiman said it best: β€˜it’s the unshakeable conviction that you are getting away with something and that any moment now they will discover you’.
My story: I have imposter syndrome around not having a PhD when working with academics. There, I said it. Yet I worked as a social researcher at universities, co-authored papers & was a manager in HE. I worry I’m not a good enough designer, despite designing for big clients.
So Step 1: Recognise it’s normal - every, single one of us have felt it at some point. Psychologist Pauline Rose Clance, who first wrote about it, says it is most acutely felt in under-represented groups. As a gay woman, I’ve definitely felt pressure to prove my worth.
Step 2: Own it - it is ok to be vulnerable & admit that you a) feel imposter syndrome & b) don’t know everything. Being open about it lets others know that it is ok; imposter syndrome grows when it is hidden in darkness of shame & silence. Why do you think I’m writing this?!
Step 3:Find evidence that you are good enough. What experiences, achievements & skills DO you have that demonstrate you can do X, or have something valuable to say on X. When we are overly self critical, we can’t always trust our own judgement. So look at the facts instead!
Step 4: Reframe it - feeling imposter syndrome can be a good thing; it means that you are stretching yourself out of your comfort zone. See if you can be comfortable with the uncomfortable and recognise it as growth.
Step 5: Lift others up - the more we normalise praising others over criticising them, the less imposter syndrome can thrive. Praise your colleagues, your friends and your family for their strengths, and be constructive when offering where they can improv
