While this is ongoing, I’ve got another on Variable Rate Insulin Infusion ( VRIII ) and requires hourly BM. If this isn’t done, this patient ends up getting too much or too little insulin which invariably can kill him.
Another had just got back from theatre where he had laparotomy, even though the surgeon has termed the surgery “successful” the success of the surgery depends largely on the post-operative nursing care I render, How’s the incision site?
This gentleman can go into shock. It is part of my job to identify the signs of shock and act appropriately.
Bed 1 is scoring a 6 on the NEWS, I had just commenced a sepsis pathway for him with hourly observations, whilst I’m on this, call bells from other patients who are in severe pains keep buzzing, they need me to get them “comfort”
Nurse,bed 4 is still complaining of chest pains, can he have some pain meds? The support worker asked. Apparently he’s complained of this during the day shift & given some painkillers. The Dr had requested an ECG be done if he complains again. Get me the ECG machine, I replied.
Oh, the patient on bed 10 had just got his HB sent in from the lab. He’ll be needing a blood transfusion in the morning, I’ve got to hurriedly take some samples sent to the lab. The G & S needs doing as well.
Nurse! Bed 5’s Next of Kin is on the phone, she wants to know the update concerning her, can you quickly attend to her? Just a minute, this patient’s IV is due, I answered. That was the ward clerk.

We are not just nurses who takes orders, we are integral part of the healthcare team and it is time we started blowing our trumpets to let the world know what we do and how vital it is to patient’s care. Silence isn’t an option!
