1. Technic ammonium nitrate (TAN) is the principal ingredient of most commercial explosives. It is an "oxidiser" which contains approximately 60% oxygen and therefore supports combustion
2. TAN is not an explosive by itself, but is turned into one when mixed with fuel and sensitizer. These commercial explosives, when used with other blasting agents like detonators, are rapidly converted into gases at high temperature and pressure in a confined state in the stock,
Leading to breaking of rock and mineral.
3. In India there are currently 4 manufacturers of TAN with total production capacity of 0.94 MTPA
i) Deepak fertilizer and petrochemicals
ii) RCF
iii) GNFC
iv) National fertilizer limited
4. 20% of TAN demand is currently met through imports.
5. Biggest challenge for the TAN industry is constrained availability and increasing prices of ammonia gas, which is the major raw material in the production of TAN.
6. Explosive manufacturers use TAN to produce emulsion explosives (liquid oxidizer solution surrounded by a continuous fuel phase), which is used for blasting in mining operations.
7. About 63% of TAN demand in India comes from the coal segment. Coal India the largest coal producer in India aims to produce 1 billion tonns of coal in fy 24.
8. Non coal mining for minerals such as limestone/iron/copper/zinc constitute 9% of the demand for TAN.
9. Infrastructure segment constitute 28% of the demand for TAN.
10. In view of the growing demand for TAN driven by growth in infrastructure and mining sectors deepak fertilizer is setting up a new TAN plant in Gorakhpur with capacity of 3,76,000. After this expansion total capacity for TAN by Deepak fertilizer will be 8,62,900
11. Other existing TAN producers are also evaluating capacity enhancements. All these TAN capacity additions will help India become self reliant for its TAN needs.
