300m Indians voted for the NDA alliance in the 2019 parliamentary elections. Modi's approval rating is 70%, and the BJP just won again in India's biggest state. But according to Srila it's totally beyond the pale if an academic is a Modi supporter.
"Can the subaltern speak?"
It's hilarious to see these academics concoct these conspiracies to defame (alleged) Modi supporters in academia. It's far more interesting to note that the overwhelming majority of academics are hostile to the BJP, despite its political success. Why is that the case?
One of the reasons that South Asian studies is in such a pathetic situation is the total inability of "scholars" to look past their political bias and attempt to actually understand how Indians (the ppl they claim to be experts on) think and feel.
Contrary to what they seem to believe, articulating and understanding political and social shifts does not equate to an endorsement. If anything, the former is necessary if one intends to actually fight hindutva. But of course, that's not their actual objective.
The goal is to maintain the obscurantist veil between the US and India, to ensure that Indians remain an inscrutable, irrational blob that academic and NGO-types can continue to project their ideological fetishes on to. Lack of empirical validity isn't a bug, it's a feature
