9-step guide on applying for graduate school:
➤ Shortlisting labs 🥼
• Visit Google Scholar
• Find research papers related to ur interests by typing keywords in the search bar.
• {if the articles are paid, read abstracts or request a copy from authors)
• Read prof.s work & cold-email them with an expression of your research interests (see my pinned tweets for free sample).
➤ Assess the requirements of the program 🧑‍💻
• Once the prof gives you the green signal to apply, check out the requirements, IELTS/TOEFL/GRE?
• If you can’t afford to take those, inquire the prof./grad school coordinator if they can be waived at all (they'll prolly waive if your medium of instruction was English in school/college).
• Can’t afford the application fee? Most programs have fee waivers, request information on how to apply.
➤ If you have to take the tests, ensure to send the copies of your results to the department at the earliest.
➤ By this time you should have known whether the program is funded or not.
Ask the prof/grad school coordinator/existing grad students for potential sources funding💵💸
➤ Sign up for free events like Open Houses/Free Grad School Fee Week to acquire as much information as possible. These help you save tons of💵
➤ Ensure to complete your SoPs and CV at least one week before the application deadline.
You might encounter issues at the time of submission so it’s advisable to have a window period.
➤ Don’t forget to request official/unofficial copies of your transcripts 🔖
Before the final submission, proofread everything at least thrice‼️‼️
