Zakah al-Fitr
A Thread 🧵
It's a sadaqah (alms) prescribed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon concluding the fast of the month of Ramadan.
It is called Zakah al-Fitr because it becomes mandatory when Ramadan comes to an end.
Ibn ‘Abbās رضي الله عنه said:
“Allah’s Messenger ﷺ obligated Zakāt Al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from loose talk, indecent speech and to feed the poor.”
[Sunan Abu Dawud]
Zakah al-Fitr is compulsory on every Muslim who owns one Sa’ of food more than he needs for himself and his family for the day and night of the Eid.
It is compulsory that the payer of Zakah al-Fitr pays this Zakah on behalf of himself, his wife, and everyone who is under his..++
..financial care. It is preferred to even pay it for the foetus in the womb of its mother.
Proof for its obligation is what was reported from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that: “The Messenger of Allah ordained Zakah al-Fitr as a Sa’ of dates or a Sa’ of barely,++
..on the slave and free man, male and female, and young and elderly Muslims, and he ordered it to be disbursed before people go out to the (Eid) prayer.” [Agreed upon]
Appropriate Time for payment of Zakat al fitr:
Best time for giving Zakat al fitr is on the Day of Eid after dawn and before the ‘Eid prayers. It is permissible to advance it before ‘Eid by a day or two, as some companions did. However, delaying it until after the ‘Eid..++
prayer is not permissible as indicated by Ibn Umar’s preceding hadith: “And he ordered it to be disbursed before people go out to pray” and in the hadith narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas: “Whosoever disburses it before (Eid) prayer, then it is an accepted Zakah, and whosoever disburses..++
..it after the prayer, then it is just like any other alms (and not Zakah al-Fitr).”

Measure of Zakat Al-Fitr
A Sa’[ One sa: 2.40kg barley] is to be paid for every individual, and it has to be from man’s food e.g. rice, dates, wheat, in accordance with the hadith of Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “We used to pay on the day of..++
..fitr during the time of the Messenger of Allah a Sa’ of food” and he (Abu Sa’id) said: “And our foods were barley, raisins, cheese a dried, curled milk (cottage cheese) used in cooking] and dates.”-Sahih Al Bukhari
Sa’ is estimated by Hanafis as = 3.25 kgs and for the majority of scholars as 2.4 kgs approximately
To Whom Zakat Al-Fitr is Given:
Zakah al-Fitr is distributed to the eight categories that Zakah (on property) is given to, and these are mentioned in Allah the Most High's Statement (surah 9, ayah 60)
Shaykhul-Islam Ibn
Taymiyah رحمه الله said:
“...A Muslim is to give Zakatul-Fitr from the staple food o f his area such as rice and the like, even if he is able to give it from the kinds o f food stated in the aforementioned hadith. This opinion is reported to be one of..++
..opinions adopted by Imdm Ahmad, and it is the opinion adopted
by the majority of scholars, and it is the soundest view in this regard.
This is because the original juristic ruling of giving charities is to support the poor."
[Majmu 'ul-Fatawa 10/410]
ZAKAT AL FITR CANNOT BE GIVEN IN THE FORM OF MONEY
It is not sufficient for a Muslim to give money (that equals the value of the legally prescribed amount of staple food) as Zakatul-Fitr, for this is considered contradictory to the Sunnah.
Moreover, it is not narrated that the Prophet ﷺ or any of his companions gave Zakatul-Fitr in the form of money instead of the
staple food.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal رحمه الله said:
“A Muslim is not to pay the poor money instead o f the pre-
scribed amount of the staple food for Zakatul-Fitr.” It was said to him, “'Umar Ibn 'Abdul-'Aziz used to accept money for Zakatul-Fitr.” He (Imam Ahmad) replied,++
“How could they adhere to the sayings of so and so and ignore the hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ stated in this regard?!” Ibn 'Umar said, “Allah’s Messenger ﷺ enjoined Zakatul-Fitr to be paid with one sa'...”.
The Wisdom Behind Zakat Al-Fitr
1- Purification of the person who fasted, from idle talks & obscenity, as it has been reported from Ibn ‘Abbas that: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordained Zakah al-Fitr to be a cleansing, for the one who fasted, from idle talks and obscene..++
..Statement [ Ar-Rafath], and as food for the needy.”-Abu Dawud
This is because in most cases the fasting person is not free from vain actions, such as idle speech; so this sadaqah becomes an expiation for the person from the prohibited or detested speech he spoke which lessens the rewards
of good deeds or may even violate the fast.
2- Generosity towards the poor & needy, & sparing them from begging on the day of ‘Eid, which entails humiliation & shame on a day that is meant for rejoicing & happiness; so that they join the rest of the community in celebrating Eid
