The highest form of writing.
HOW TO TYPE EMOTIONS.
A guide based on brain research.
- The most dominant way to hold a puppy.
- Smell unnoticeable with our new fragrance: Discretion.
- The most massive way to sleep.
What is wrong here?
The emotions in these examples don't add up and that is very confusing for us.
If you learn to do it right you're gonna be able to type excitment, comfort, dominance and other emotions.
And in the end this is what a good writer does:
He types up emotions.
This is where modern brain research comes into play because if you want to understand emotions you need to understand the neurologic processes in your brain that create emotions.
You want a puppy to be safe with you because it activates the caregiving area in your brain.
So you want to know the safest way to hold a puppy.
You want to smell so good the opposite sex can't even think straight anymore because of various areas in your brain regulating sexual behavior.
Smell confusingly good with our new fragrance.
You want to sleep light and quiet like a feather because your homeostatic balancing system wants to rest effectively.
What you need as a writer is a system to understand the relevant emotion behind a product/service/topic.
The most applicable system I could find is the one from Hans-Georg-Hรคusels Book Brain View.
He breaks all the processes down into 3 emotional directions.
1 Balance
2 Dominance
3 Stimulance
This really helps a lot because with these 3 you can set the emotional tone of your writing without having to go through dozens of motives.
1 Balance
The desire for safety and stability.
- Keep everything stable.
- Don't take any risks.
- Stay in your comfort zone.
- Prevent every form of disturbance.
Products:
Insurance, traditional quality products, the own house, alarm system, supplies,...
2 Dominance
The desire for power and status.
- Take a stand
- Widen your territory
- Outperform rivals
- Keep autonomy
Products:
Expensive watches, elite clubs, gyms, cars, supplements,...
3 Stimulance
The desire for new experiences and individuality.
- Break out of everyday life
- Explore your surroundings
- Look for rewards
- Avoid boredom
Products:
Travel industry, electronics, events, innovative design,...
They have 2 sides:
Fulfilled & Unfullfilled.
1 Balance System:
Fulfilled: security, homeliness.
Unfulfilled: fear, panic.
2 Dominance System:
Fulfilled: Confidence, Pride.
Unfulfilled: Anger, fury.
3 Stimulance System
Fulfilled: Fun, arousal.
Unfulfilled: Boredom, lethargy.
The thing is to realize that these 3 often interfere with each other.
- The balance system wants you to stay at home in your comfort zone.
- The stimulance system wants you to go out and try something new.
Improve your writing even more if you leverage both sides.
How to apply:
1 Deep dive into your product, service, topic
2 Understand which system(s) are involved
3 What is the desire and what has to be avoided
4 Brainstorm consistent words/synonyms
5 Implement
