Someone knocked my door and told me he was a zomato delivery guy. Asked me for water. Gave him.
His bike apparently got punctured and he'd left his bike for repair 2km away.
He told me he needed to go urgently to pick up his daughter from school.
I told him I'll be leaving to office in 20 mins and that I can drop him at the bike repair place.
Or that he can find public transportation and go get his daughter.
He said he had to go elsewhere before he went to his daughter's school and that he has no money.
I told him still that I could drop him at the bike repair shop and that he can get his bike and go.
So, he went - "I don't have money. Can you help me get my bike?"
I was like how can I help with that?
Then he said - "I have PayTM. If you can give me money on paytm for bike repair, I'll go and get my daughter.
I'll wait half hour if you're busy - so that you can do that while you're leaving to office."
I asked him what the amount was.
I was thinking a puncture repair would cost like 150-200.
He said 2800.
I was taken aback.
Then my mind started asking me questions.
1) Why does a bike puncture require 2800 to repair?
2) Even tires don't cost that much.
3) If he was from Zomato and he had a puncture 2.5kms away, how is he here?
This was an apartment society and such things are uncommon.
I immediately knew this was a scam.
A man who has a 10k+ worth smartphone saying he has zero money
saying he has to go somewhere and asking me to help
by "transferring money to his PayTM"
is the ROFL kind of reach that I have seen for PayTM.
I told him I can't help him, and that he should find someone else.
He left thereafter.
Because the storyline is similar to the bus-stand scams that happen across major bus stands where people ask you for money saying they have to get somewhere.
Either way.
If you hear a similar storyline, be sure to check and authenticate their identity and confirm they are who they are.
Only if you want to help.
