Important to understand the asymmetry of this political and cultural conflict
The logic here is that the left will pay a cost for consolidating government power because at some point they have to hand the machinery back over to their political opponents but this is wrong ๐Ÿงต/1
We've been taught that the inevitable pendulum swing of democracy serves as a natural check on the power of government, you don't want to construct an apparatus that is too powerful because eventually the voters will hand it to the other side but that's not how it works /2
The majority of governing no longer takes place at the level of congress or the president, the decisions are made by the technocracy safely tucked away in government agencies, the permanent bureaucracy that many call the deep state /3
When people say that they want a process to be less political, when they say they want decisions to be made by the experts what they mean is they want the decisions to be made by the bureaucrats in the deep state /4
This is the myth of objective public policy, the idea that by utilizing technocratic expertise we can arrive at an objective and value-free solution for government policy that is guarded against the ugly bias of political actors /5
But of course the expertise of bureaucrats doesn't guard them against bias at all, they are still making decisions based on their worldview
And all experts need to attend college, preferably very prestigious progressive ones which inform that world view /6
Once power is consolidated under a government agency that agency is immediately staffed with managers and experts who share the same ideology and value system, and it isn't Christianity of small-government conservatism, and these people don't leave when the left gets voted out /7
Their ideological footsoldiers are protected by their "objective" technocratic skills and the majority maintain their position no matter who is in charge
This is why things sprint left when progressives are in charge and stand still at best when a Republican takes office /8
The rachet only moves one direction because it is designed that way
So the left will likely suffer zero consequences for creating a ministry of truth when President Trump of DeSantis or whoever gets into office /9
Any leader on the right who is serious about fixing the problem has to dismantle the administrative state, clear out the entrenched bureaucracy, and return power back to an executive who can actually govern the country again or they are wasting your time /10
