'The descent of the Modernists' — American cartoon from 1924 depicting the decline of Christianity as a stairway of concessions leading to atheism.
The cartoon, by E. J. Pace, appeared in William Jennings Bryan's 'Seven Questions in Dispute', a short polemic published amid the wider Christian Fundamentalist-Modernist dispute of the 1920s.
Pace drew a number of cartoons for Bryan's book. Another famous one shows the Pied Piper leading schoolchildren to the cave of disbelief to the tune of 'Darwinian hypothesis of evolution'.
More by Pace, all published in 'Seven Questions in Dispute'
