It marks the 77th anniversary of Sefit & guelma massacre when French army along with its settlers massacred around 45k muslims in Algeria.
++
It all began when europe was celebrating the defeat of Nazism on may 8, France gathered the locals to commemorate, but the timing coincided with months of unrest & the rise of anti colonial sentiments among algerians who had been subjected to brutal French rule since 1830.
+
Around 5000 protesters took to the streets of setif city demanding the freedom from French occupation same day on may 8.
Many of the revolutionary youths were carrying placards & Algerian flag that was banned at the time.
The fragile ego of Frenchman got triggered & French army opened fire on protesters killing thousands of people demanding their basic rights.
It later turned into massive clashes bw resistance forces & France & as usual the civilised france started aerial bombing of villages.
+
45 thousand algerian men, women & children were killed in 14 days till may 22.
The massive massacre infused the nationalistic spirit around the country & given birth to war of independence in 1954. Long live algeria!
