Are we losing the IPL fever?
What are the reasons behind the sharp decline of IPL viewerships?
A thread🧵
Indian premier league the biggest festival of this nation is in it’s full swing.
With Dhoni returning back into captaincy and Virat hitting that half century, the game is now on!
We’ve had many games this year that took a surprising turn in the end overs and made us stick but…
I know! I know! None of us watched even a single game from start to finish this season and the IPL fever is now a thing of the past!
How is this even possible?
We are a country which can only unite during a cricket game, the only time when a father and son have a conversation is during a cricket match.
Latest numbers from BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) also proves this new trend.
IPL which is the most popular sporting league in the world has seen a 33 percent decline in TV ratings from IPL 2021.
Let’s look at some of the reasons for this decline in viewership:
1) One of the biggest reasons that many experts are stating is “No Lockdown”
The last two seasons of IPL were conducted in a lockdown and people had nothing to do.
IPL came as a guiding light for their boredom, but this time the condition is different.
People have started their jobs and they are giving the outside life more priority than a cricket match!
Okay so this cannot be the only reason, right? we’ve always had our jobs and still we are missing that IPL craze this year!
“Big players are unable to perform”: IPL was all about De Villiers’ 360 degree shots, Gayle storm, Bumrah’s yorkers, Kohli’s elegant cover drives and Rohit Sharma’s pull shots.
Some of these players are now retired and the others are not able to perform.
Yes, there are some new boys who are hitting huge sixes and bowling at a great speed, but we cannot connect with them so early.
3)This year’s IPL is being played in only two cities i.e Mumbai and Pune.
The best thing about IPL was it’s reach in the tier 2-3 cities and this year that’s missing because of it’s limitation to only one state.
Earlier the whole city used to light up during the game.
There were big hoardings of the players all around the town and markets were flooded with team merchandise.
4) This year we had a mega auction and many big players jumped boats.
Missing of Pandya brothers from Mumbai Indians made the league a little less interesting as the team has managed to only win one game till now.
Fans are missing the stars of their fav teams and it’s taking some time to get adjusted with the new normal.
This might be the biggest reason for disinterest.
With IPL media rights going for sale next year this decline in user interest is not a good news but experts are sure that the numbers will start to rise as the league progresses.
BCCI is planning to raise 33,000 crore by selling the rights next year and it will be interesting to see who’s going to take this challenge to save this ship!
What do you think will happen from here? Let’s talk in the comments
